From Naivasha to Malaba: The SGR Project That Will Reshape East Africa

The Government of Kenya has intensified plans to extend the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Naivasha to Malaba, marking a significant step in the country’s long-term infrastructure strategy.

This new phase of the railway project is expected to enhance regional connectivity, boost trade, and position Kenya as a critical transport hub within East Africa.

Route and Key Details

The Naivasha–Kisumu section of the SGR will begin at Emurtoto in Narok County and stretch approximately 264 kilometers to Kisumu.

In addition, the project will include an 8.69-kilometer branch line linking the railway to the proposed new Kisumu Port, a move aimed at strengthening lake transport and cargo handling capacity.

Strategic Importance

The extension to Malaba is particularly significant as it connects Kenya to Uganda and the wider East African region. Once complete, the railway is expected to streamline the movement of goods from the Port of Mombasa through inland Kenya and into neighboring countries.

This development aligns with broader regional integration goals under the Northern Corridor, facilitating faster and more cost-effective logistics across borders.

Economic Impact

The Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba SGR project is projected to:

  • Reduce transportation costs for goods and passengers
  • Decongest major highways, particularly the busy Nairobi–Nakuru route
  • Spur industrial growth in western Kenya
  • Create employment opportunities during construction and operation

The connection to Kisumu Port is also expected to revitalize trade along Lake Victoria, opening up new economic opportunities for counties in the western region.

Looking Ahead

While timelines and financing details remain under discussion, the project signals the government’s continued commitment to expanding modern rail infrastructure.

If successfully implemented, the Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba SGR extension could redefine trade routes, strengthen regional ties, and accelerate economic growth across Kenya and beyond.
