Nyongi’ Drops: Matata and Marioo Ignite a Cross-Border Banger

Kenyan pop collective Matata has released a new single, “Nyongi,” in collaboration with Tanzanian star Marioo.

The track serves as the first preview of their upcoming EP, ERA (East Rise Again), scheduled for release in June 2026, and is already drawing attention across East Africa and beyond.

Produced by Kenyan hitmaker Wodomolo, “Nyongi” blends Matata’s distinctive pop sound with Marioo’s smooth Bongo Flava style, creating a seamless fusion of regional influences.

Built on layered percussion and infectious East African rhythms, the song stands out as a polished, melodic anthem that reflects the growing synergy between Kenya and Tanzania’s music scenes.

Speaking on the collaboration, Matata noted:

“Something special happened when we teamed up with Marioo. We stepped into the studio in Nairobi and came out with a song that feels bigger than the room it was made in. It’s Sheng meeting Bongo Flava, Nairobi meeting Dar es Salaam — different places, but the same energy. For us, this isn’t just a collaboration; it’s a moment.”

“Nyongi” signals the start of a new phase for Matata. Their forthcoming six-track EP, ERA (East Rise Again), will bring together a range of East African artists, reflecting the group’s push for a cohesive regional sound while preserving distinct cultural influences.

Listeners can also anticipate the release of the next single, “Kanairo,” expected in May 2026, as the rollout builds toward the full EP debut later in the year.

Originating from an impromptu studio session in Nairobi, “Nyongi” reflects the creative spark that emerges when two of East Africa’s most dynamic acts come together. What began as a relaxed exchange of ideas quickly evolved into a fluid collaboration, as Matata and Marioo found a natural musical synergy that carries through the track.

Marioo described the experience, saying:

“Working on ‘Nyongi’ with Matata was an incredible experience. Their energy and unique sound brought something special to the record. This song celebrates rhythm, movement and the powerful East African connection in music, and I’m excited for fans to experience it and see the energy Matata will bring when performing it live.”

The release of “Nyongi” underscores a broader trend of artistic collaboration across East Africa, as musicians continue to transcend borders and shape a unified regional sound.

In the past year, Matata has recorded significant growth, surpassing 45 million streams and reaching more than one million listeners across 182 countries. Their high-energy performances, coupled with a strong cultural identity, continue to position them among the region’s most prominent musical exports.
