Shock Shift: Joshua Baraka Beats Diamond Platnumz on Spotify

Ugandan singer Joshua Baraka is steadily reshaping East Africa’s streaming landscape after surpassing Tanzania’s longtime chart heavyweight Diamond Platnumz in monthly listeners on Spotify.

As of March 2026, Baraka commands approximately 1.71 million monthly listeners, edging past Diamond’s estimated 1.5 million. The shift reflects changing audience preferences in the region, where digital consumption is increasingly defining influence and reach.

Despite this milestone, both artists remain significantly behind Kenya’s fast-rising star Sofiya Nzau, who dominates with around 6.5 million streams, underscoring her current supremacy in East Africa’s streaming space.

Baraka’s ascent has been deliberate rather than explosive. He first captured attention with breakout releases such as Nana, where his soft vocals and emotionally driven delivery distinguished him from his peers. That early momentum translated into broader regional recognition, with his music gaining traction across East Africa through playlists and algorithm-driven discovery.

In September 2025, Baraka marked a historic moment by becoming the first Ugandan artist to surpass one million monthly listeners on Spotify—a benchmark that signaled a new era for Uganda’s music industry on global streaming platforms.

His catalogue has since continued to expand in both reach and impact. Tracks like Wrong Places have played a central role in this growth, helping push his total streams beyond 34.4 million, with the single itself contributing over 20 million streams.

Geographically, his audience is no longer confined to Uganda. Key listener hubs now include Nairobi, Lagos, Kigali, and Kampala, highlighting his growing cross-border appeal and resonance with diverse audiences.

Beyond streaming, Baraka has strengthened his profile through live performances, appearing at major East African events and stepping onto international stages such as Afro Nation Portugal, further cementing his status as one of the region’s most promising global exports.
