Dramatic Helicopter Scare Sparks Memories of Kenya’s Dark History of Deadly Air Crashes

A dramatic video circulating online shows a helicopter struggling to gain altitude while hovering dangerously close to a forested area. The tense footage has sparked concern after reports suggested that high-ranking government officials were allegedly on board the aircraft. Although the circumstances surrounding the flight remain unclear, the incident has reignited discussion about the risks associated with air travel involving senior Kenyan leaders.

Kenya has experienced several tragic aviation accidents over the years, some of which have claimed the lives of prominent political and military figures. These incidents often occur during official missions, constituency visits, or security operations. Investigations into such crashes have frequently cited factors such as poor weather conditions, mechanical failure, or pilot error.

One of the most recent tragedies occurred on February 28, 2026, when Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament Johana Ng’eno died after a helicopter crash in Chepkiep, Mosop area of Nandi County. The aircraft reportedly encountered heavy rainfall shortly after takeoff, and when it attempted to resume its journey, it struck a tree and burst into flames. All six people on board, including the legislator and other passengers, lost their lives in the crash.

Kenya also mourned the loss of General Francis Ogolla, the country’s Chief of Defence Forces, who died in a military helicopter crash on April 18, 2024, in Sindar, Elgeyo-Marakwet County. The helicopter went down shortly after takeoff during an official mission to assess security operations in the North Rift. A later investigation attributed the crash to a mechanical malfunction involving the aircraft’s engine compressor.

Another tragedy that shocked the nation occurred in June 2012 when Internal Security Minister George Saitoti and his assistant minister Orwa Ojode died in a police helicopter crash near Ngong Forest shortly after departing from Wilson Airport. The accident killed all six people on board and sparked intense national mourning and investigations.
